How many Instagram hashtags should I use?
Instagram was created by Kevin Systom and Mike Krieger. The online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms.
The network launched in October 2010 as a free mobile app. The service was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 and since then has continued to grow in popularity.
For many people using Instagram is merely about capturing life’s simple moments and sharing them with family and friends. Users enjoy applying filters and effects to their photos.
As Instagram has grown in popularity many businesses have realised that it’s a platform they should consider, especially if they have a bank of beautiful images.
One question we are often asked is “how many hashtags should I use on Instagram”?
You can use up to 30 hashtags. The more hashtags you use the greater the exposure and reach your photo will potentially gain. However, you need the right hashtags for your business.
To understand the hashtags that will work for you, some research is needed.
Try to think about the following …
- Does the hashtag describe my business or my audience?
- Do you think your audience would search for it?
- How many posts does the hashtag have associated with it? Try looking for hashtags with between 1,000 and 500,000 posts associated with them. These will be active hashtags that aren’t too busy.
You can do your research on your phone by simply typing in your hashtag in the search field. Many of our clients are self-employed therefore we could take a look at the hashtag #selfemployment
As you can see this has 13,975 posts associated with it. You also then get some recommendations in terms of related hashtags which you can click on and research further.
If you’re a local business be sure to take a look at your local hashtag. Again by searching in your region, you may find other relevant hashtags that could expand the reach of your photo or video.
Happy snapping and tagging.
